Dimming your lighting provides excellent control over the amount of light that is projected from the fixture, which in turn reduces the amount of energy that particular fixture consumes, saving you money. A 60W light bulb that is dimmed to 50% only puts out 50% of the light as it would at 100%, however the light bulb only consumes 30W instead of 60W and its lifespan is doubled. Incandescent lighting is the easiest and most inexpensive to dim. Fluorescent lighting can be dimmed with the correct ballast and dimmer combination. HID lighting can be step dimmed with proper systems. Some LED lighting can be dimmed as well. In all cases, when a fixture is dimmed, it uses less energy. Dimming may be used in conjunction with Daylight Harvesting through automatic control systems.
